All 300SL's built before about 1960 and running their original heads should have a Spacer on the Plug to achieve the correct position of the Spark Plug in the Cylinder. To tell one Cylinder Head from another - late heads with 19mm Thread length will have a "19" cast into the head between the Plug Ports, very late Heads cast in the 2000's will have a "198" cast into the Head. The Reason for this is that sometime in the late 1950's the standard length of Spark Plugs was changed from 17mm to 19mm. If no spacer is used on early Heads Carbon can build up on the exposed Threads and cause damage to the Cylinder Head when they are removed.
